A Woman and a Man

...sat facing each other on the grass. They studied their books and they sat. They looked at each other every now and then, and one of them would smile. They both noticed a shadow, and both ignored it. He would turn a page quickly and the sound it made was not worth writing about. She would turn the page more carefully, but the sound was still not worthy of comment.

Later, they would join the main festival and they would enjoy the musical acts. They were joined by a tall strange lone man. They both knew this man.

These two people were in Paris but felt like they were in Paris. Strangely, so did the third person, who usually did not feel like he was where he was.

Other people watched these people and later, more people would watch them also. Many many more people again would watch the other people, and these people were in turn watched by many other people. Some of the people watching the first people also watched some of the people watching them, although it was difficult for them to know who had watched them, or even who they had watched. There were many people to watch and many people to be watched by and watching was something the people had been doing all their lives. As far as they understood, they'd be watching other people for the rest of their lives also.

The man and the woman were not thinking this when they sat facing each other.
