A training session about which I was initially sceptical has yielded a reflection upon myself: that my passion generally arises in going well beyond the 80/20 Pareto principle. My passion is fired by deep understanding of things, not broad. In the analogy of cataloguing a garden, the 80/20 approach is to select the most prominent trees, write down the most salient details, and move on… whereas I will pull out a magnifying glass and study everything, inch by inch. And that means I may spend much time and effort with little to show for it of immediate value to others, but it also means I will find little flowers behind the bigger trees which may yield unexpected, outsized impact. The empowering part was that my colleagues and the trainer pointed out this gives me the possibility - by no means certain, but possible - of being outstanding in an environment of minimal effort.
